Directions & Transit Options – The Wingate House

Address: 1045 Snowden Street, Silverton, CO 81433

Driving (Recommended):

Silverton is a remote and beautiful mountain town surrounded by the peaks of the San Juan Mountains. Getting here is part of the experience, and you’ll find two scenic routes:

From the North (via Montrose Regional Airport):

Drive south on Highway 550 through Ridgway and Ouray, continuing over the breathtaking Million Dollar Highway. This winding canyon route offers dramatic views of rugged mountains and is paved and accessible year-round (though winter conditions can require caution).

From the South (via Durango–La Plata County Airport):

Take Highway 550 north through the San Juan National Forest. As you ascend into the inner San Juan Mountains, you’ll pass sweeping views of the Animas River Valley and rugged terrain. This route is also paved and accessible year-round (winter weather applies).

In Town Directions:

From Highway 550, turn north onto Greene Street (Silverton’s main street).

Then turn left on East 11th Street, continue for three blocks past an old brick library building with a kid's playground, and then turn left onto Snowden Street.

The Wingate House is the second driveway on the right — a striking Victorian home with blue trim and mountain views. The driveway is long and straight. You may park directly in front of the house. There’s plenty of space for several vehicles.

Transit Alternatives & Pickup Options:

Train: The historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates scenic one-way and round-trip excursions between Durango and Silverton during the main season (May- Oct ).

Guests arriving by train can request a pickup at the Silverton depot to the Wingate House.  Just message your host, Quai Barker to arrange that.

Shuttle/Bus: Private shuttle services such as San Juan Backcountry offer drop-offs in Silverton from Durango or Montrose. Book well in advance, as availability can be limited and costs are higher than self-driving.

Off-road/Alternate Route: If you’re arriving via County Road 2 (from Lake City or Creede over the mountain passes), once you enter Silverton follow the same “In Town Directions” above (Greene Street → East 11th Street (will be a right turn not left) → Snowden.

Note: This route is more rugged, requires a 4x4 vehicle with high clearance and may be used for adventure-style travel.

A Touch of History:

This historic home once belonged to the late renowned San Juan painter Judith Graham, whose landscape paintings were inspired by these very mountains. As you make your way into Silverton, you’ll be driving or arriving through the same scenery that inspired her art and legacy.
